What Is LC Phone?
LC Phone is GoHighLevel's own telephony service. You use it instead of connecting Twilio, Telnyx, or another provider. It handles inbound and outbound calls, SMS, MMS, and ring groups, all within GHL without needing a separate account elsewhere.
For UK users, the question is usually the same: "Is it cheaper than Twilio, and what do I need to do to get SMS working?" The answer is yes on price for voice, and for SMS — you need A2P 10DLC registration first. Most people miss that step and then wonder why their texts aren't sending.
LC Phone vs Twilio vs Telnyx — UK Pricing
Pricing varies by provider and volume, but here's what you should budget for a typical UK small business sending around 500 SMS and taking 200 minutes of calls a month:
| Service | Monthly Cost (ex. VAT) | SMS per msg | Voice per min | Phone Number | Setup Faff |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LC Phone | £0 (pay per use) | ~4.2p | ~1.1p | £0.80/mo | Low — built in |
| Twilio | £0 (pay per use) | ~4.5p | ~1.4p | £1.00/mo | Medium — separate account |
| Telnyx | £0 (pay per use) | ~3.8p (volume) | ~1.0p | £0.85/mo | Medium — requires config |
LC Phone is very competitive on voice. The main advantage is not having to manage a separate Twilio account — no API keys to rotate, no separate billing. Everything shows up on your GHL invoice or is deducted from your balance.
The catch: SMS reliability for UK numbers has been patchy with LC Phone compared to Twilio, especially for outbound to UK mobiles. Some users report 5-15 minute delivery delays during peak times. Twilio still wins on deliverability.
What Is A2P 10DLC and Why Should You Care?
A2P 10DLC stands for Application-to-Person 10-Digit Long Code. It's the system US and UK mobile carriers use to approve and regulate business SMS. If you send an SMS from a UK number to a UK mobile without it, the message either doesn't arrive or gets flagged as spam.
The rule: any business sending SMS through an application — your CRM, GHL, anything automated — has to register your brand and campaign with the carrier network. This has been mandatory in the UK since early 2025. Many GHL users in the UK don't know about it until their SMS stops working.
LC Phone handles the technical A2P 10DLC registration for you during setup. But you need to provide the right information. If you skip the step, SMS looks like it sends from your GHL dashboard but the recipient never gets it.
Setting Up LC Phone for a UK GHL Sub-Account
Step 1: Top Up Your Balance
LC Phone is pay-as-you-go. You load credit into your GHL account and it draws down as you use calls and SMS. Minimum top-up is usually £10. Go to Settings → LC Phone → Add Funds.
Step 2: Buy a UK Number
- In LC Phone settings, click Buy Number
- Filter by country: United Kingdom
- You'll see geographic (local area codes) and national (non-geographic) numbers
- Pick a number — £0.80/month typically
- Assign it to the sub-account you want it active on
Most UK users want a local rate number (01 or 02 area code) so it looks like a normal business line. National rate numbers (03) work fine but people are less likely to answer an 03 number they don't recognise.
Step 3: Register for A2P 10DLC
This is the step most people miss:
- In LC Phone settings, look for 10DLC Campaign Registration or SMS Compliance
- Register your business: company name, registered address, Companies House number if you have one
- Choose a campaign type. For most UK small businesses, Standard Brand (for customer service, appointment reminders, notifications) is correct
- Submit. The vetting takes 24-72 hours
- GHL sends you a confirmation when it's approved
Step 4: Configure SMS Sending
Once approved, go back to LC Phone settings and set your SMS sender number. You can choose the LC Phone number you bought. Test by sending a message to your own mobile from the GHL contact record.
Enable SMS Fallback in workflow action settings. If LC Phone SMS fails (rare after registration, but it happens), this makes sure the message goes out by email instead. Better than losing a lead because of a carrier hiccup.
LC Phone Sub-Account Pricing Breakdown
Here's what a typical first month costs for a UK sole trader:
| Item | Cost (ex. VAT) |
|---|---|
| LC Phone Number (UK mobile) | £0.80 |
| 500 outbound SMS | £21.00 |
| 200 mins incoming calls | £2.20 |
| Initial credit top-up | £30.00 |
| Total first month | £24.00 (usage) + £30 top-up |
What LC Phone Doesn't Do Well
LC Phone is fine for a standard sub-account. But it has real limitations worth being upfront about:
- No MMS (picture messages). If you want to send images by SMS, you still need Twilio or Telnyx. LC Phone is text and voice only.
- No shared number pools. You can share a Twilio number across multiple sub-accounts. LC Phone doesn't do pool routing — each number belongs to one sub-account.
- SMS delivery delays. During UK business hours, delivery can take 5-15 minutes. For time-sensitive messages (appointment reminders 2 hours before), this is noticeable.
- Limited number types. UK geographic numbers start at 01. If you need 0800 (freephone) numbers, you can't get those through LC Phone yet.
- No regulatory oversight from your side. If an SMS fails to deliver, you get an error in the GHL logs but no detail on why. With Twilio, you have a full event log for every message.
When You Should Still Use Twilio Instead
LC Phone works for most standard use cases. But switch to Twilio if you need:
- MMS / picture messaging capability
- Multiple sub-accounts sharing one number pool
- Reliable sub-30-second SMS delivery for time-critical alerts
- Freephone (0800) numbers for client-facing lines
- Detailed message logs for compliance or troubleshooting
Connecting Twilio to GHL takes about 15 minutes. You create a Twilio account, get your Account SID and Auth Token, then paste them into GHL's LC Phone settings as an alternative provider. GHL holds your Twilio balance too — you don't manage it separately from the GHL dashboard once it's linked.
UK SMS Compliance Checklist
Before you send your first SMS through GHL in the UK, run through this:
- Apply for A2P 10DLC — register your brand and campaign through LC Phone settings. Allow 24-72 hours for approval.
- Include opt-out language — every SMS must include "Reply STOP to opt out." GHL adds this automatically on workflow SMS, but check if you're sending manual messages.
- Set quiet hours — in GHL's phone settings, configure quiet hours (usually 9pm to 9am) so SMS and calls don't go out at antisocial times.
- Keep an SMS opt-in record — if the ICO ever asks, you need to show the contact agreed to receive SMS. A form submission with a consent tick is enough. Keep it in the contact's timeline.
- Test with a real UK mobile — before turning on any automated SMS workflow, send a test from GHL to your personal phone. Check it arrives, the sender ID is correct, and the STOP opt-out works.
What a Sub-Account Actually Costs Per Year
If you're coming from a direct GHL agency account and wondering about the smaller route through a sub-account, here's the full picture for a UK sole trader for a year:
| Item | Annual Cost |
|---|---|
| TinyBills sub-account ($97) | ~£76 |
| UK phone number (LC Phone, £0.80/mo × 12) | £9.60 |
| SMS (est. 400/mo at ~4.2p each, incl. VAT) | ~£242 |
| Voice (est. 150 min/mo at ~1.1p each, incl. VAT) | ~£24 |
| AI conversational voice credits (pay as you use) | ~£50-£150 |
| Total estimated annual | ~£400-£500 incl. everything |
Got a GHL sub-account yet? You can get full platform access through TinyBills at $97/year. Same platform, same features — just a simpler entry point than a direct GHL agency plan.
